히스테리안은 예술과 문화를 연결하는 다양한 프로젝트를 선보이고 있는 기획 단체입니다. 2018년부터 장르의 경계를 넘나드는 질문과 실험을 바탕으로 출판, 시각 전시, 문화 기획, 비평 연구를 통해 새로운 감각과 시선을 제안하고 있습니다.

히스테리Hysteria는 그리스어 어원에서 자궁hystera을 뜻합니다. 히스테리 개념은 이후 여성의 섹슈얼리티에 관한 담론을 통해 병리학적으로 특성화되었습니다. 히스테리안은 이 단어가 품고 있는 젠더화된 역사와 문화 권력의 흔적에 주목하면서 동시대 사회가 내재하고 있는 정치, 문화적 정동을 탐구합니다.

히스테리안은 모든 인간은 자궁에서 태어난다는 보편적인 사실에서 출발합니다. 섹슈얼리티는 보편 역사를 반대하는 대안 역사의 하나로 머무르지 않고, 생명과 돌봄, 연대의 가치를 바탕으로 보편적 사실에 대한 역사로 존재합니다. 히스테리안은 이러한 사실에 근거하여 오늘의 삶과 예술을 연결하는 콘텐츠를 만들어갑니다.

Hysterian is a cultural and artistic collective that develops and presents projects bridging art and culture through publishing, exhibitions, programming, and critical research. We create since 2018 new perspectives and sensibilities rooted in inquiry and experimentation that cross traditional genre boundaries.

The word hysteria originates from the Greek hystera, meaning "womb." Over time, the term expanded to encompass the pathological traits ascribed to the "hysteric" within discourses on female sexuality. Hysterian critically engages with the gendered history and power dynamics embedded in this word, exploring their ongoing political and emotional influence on present-day society.

We start from the simple fact that every human being is born from a womb. For us, sexuality constitutes a path through which we connect to the shared experience of history—not only as a counterpoint, but more as a force rooted in values like life, care, and solidarity. With this understanding of the universal at its core, Hysterian creates work that bridges art with the realities of contemporary life
